Curren Price Literacy Writers Contest
|
|
Reflections Publishing was pleased to host a writing seminar featuring members of the Genesis Writers Group, a community-based literature and literacy advocates organization. The group bestowed special awards and scholarships on community writers who submitted personal reflective works of writing for the first annual “Curren Price Literacy Writers Contest.”
Assemblymember Curren D. Price, Jr. greeted award recipients and assembled guests as he spoke about the relevance, significance and purpose of Genesis Writers Group and talked about the importance of the Curren Price Literacy Writers Contest for community residents. Mr. Price said “Genesis Writers are an essential community resource of people dedicated to preserving our history through creative writing and heightening public awareness of many issues affecting our society through the written word.”
The creative writing compositions and stories that were submitted to the Curren Price Literacy Writers Contest explored topical issues that cut to the core of urban life, such as homelessness, teen violence, victimization, and other serious life challenges.
Assemblymember Price said the issues explored by the writers focused on real-life circumstances that the State Legislature could use to propose solutions, provide assistance and promote action to address a range of pressing community needs.
Mr. Price expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of the writers who competed in his inaugural writing contest. The contest winners for the First Annual Curren Price Literacy Writers Contest are:
First Place -- Ms. Olivia Patterson. Ms. Patterson received a certificate of recognition. Her scholarship award included a full workshop with Reflections Publishing for an opportunity to have her story published. Mr. Michael Jones presented Ms. Patterson’s award.
Second Place -- Demitri Adderley. Mr. Adderley received a certificate of recognition and a scholarship award. Ms. Tori Bailey presented Mr. Adderley’s award.
Third Place -- Mr. Johnny Cox. Mr. Cox received a certificate of recognition and a scholarship award. The Reverend Charlotte Woodard presented Mr. Cox’s award.
Deborah Bellis and Ray Driver of Reflections Publishing participated in the workshop. Noted community writers Flo Selfman, Cynthia Gibson, Caroline Reynolds, Robin Quinn, Gerald Everett Jones, and Rosalind Henderson offered literary tips and story writing strategies to award recipients.
Surprise guests attending the Writers Contest included artist Synthia St. James; Beverly Hills artist Emmy Lu, who has a painting currently on display for President Obama and his family in the White House; and Beatrice, a famous Beverly Hills Talent Agent who answered many frequently asked questions that a writer might need to know about how to modify their book into a film project. It was a a very positive event for writers in our community. We are presently collecting stories for Curren Price Writers Contest 2010. All writers’ stories are welcome for years to come, so keep writing and keep sending your stories to genesiswriters@yahoo.com
